Within the second week of our media studies lesson, as a class we learned about the 'genre as a system' theory. Firstly we recapped the different genres that there is, such as sub-genre and hybrid genre.
In addition the the genre theories we learned about the repetition and difference theory, which is genre products woking through repetition and containing certain elements or combination of elements within forms.
Genre theorists that we learned about was Stuart Hall - encoding and decoding, this theorist had an old view, however there is now a new view which is that the audience must investigate representations within and decide themselves are there are multiple representations that an individual is open to whilst watching a music video. In addition, you can decode in three ways:
1) Dominant reading - this happens by the reader sharing text code and accepting as a person what you see.
2) Negotiated reading - this occurs by partly sharing what is seen and broadly accepts the preferred reading.
3) Oppositional reading - When parties fully disagree on what they see.
Furthermore, we also analysed other theory's such as the Andrew Goodwin's theory (1992) 'voyeurism', including the John Berger 'ways of seeing.
After analysing and looking at all the theories I had to create a blog on the 'genre as a system' theory, analysing music videos.
I also had to plan my pitch for my chosen unsigned artist, who is Bethan Mary Leadley - My Drunken Friday Night.

My chosen unsigned artist.
I have done extensive research in order to find a suitable artist for my media project. Although the artist that I have chosen may not be my final choice it will be a idea to follow.
The Artist that I have chosen is a female acoustic artist from named Bethan Mary Leadly. The song name is called 'My drunken Friday night'. However, as she has found this out she decides to escape and get over the situation my paying a male attention. 1:08 to 1:23 then shows another side to the narrative of the song, as 'red heels' are mentioned, as well as 'heart on fire' signifies that this is a emotional love song, as well as the colour red connotes love and passion. Which then occurs after, which could possibly signify passion. From approximately 1:59 to 2:10 connotes sex or a special moment that may not occur again. Throughout the chorus of the song it signify's that the artists wants to escape from the emotions that she is feeling as she is intoxicated by alcohol.

week one - blog reflection.
My initial ideas.
My initial ideas for my portfolio is to find an acoustic genre
non-signed artist, in order to produce an emotional yet subtle and lively
combination music video – in relation to the beat and tempo of the music . I
would like my video to be based on the characters point of view, however also
involve two other people. The reason behind my choice is because I would like
to create a narrative music video.
Who would I like to work with?
At this current moment, I do not yet know who I will be working with;
however I would like to work with one of my fellow peers that share the same
initial ideas with me, as this would create a better chance of our music video
being of better quality. As well as someone who is reliable that is
punctual to lessons and also completes
work in by the deadline.
My hopes and fears about the project.
My hopes for my
project is that I create a genuine high quality music video and find the right
partner to work with. I also hope that I have chosen the right genre of music
to make a video in order to interlink with the narrative style of the music
video. My fears however, consist of losing motivation as it will take a lot of
time and effort in planning and making the music video, as well as not being
able to finish all the coursework on time.

Styles and conventions of music video's.
Narrative: Within a music video such as the one below, it tells a story of a chain of events and the majority of the time can appear to be a short film with or without dialogue. The use of narrative within music videos was very popular within the 1980's; however it is still used today especially in hip-hop and country music genres.

Genre as a system theory:
The theorist Steve Neale (born January 1958) invented the theory of the 'genre as a system' theory. Steve Neale says 'genres are instances of repetition and difference' and 'genres are not systems, they are processes of systemisation'. The theory of 'genre as a system' is when media texts (for example music videos) meet the audiences expectations through generic conventions.
An example of Steve Neale's theory can be seen in the artist 'Drake' with the music video named 'started from the bottom'.

The storyline of the video is generally portraying the struggle of where the artist used to be, to where he is now (a famous RnB/hiphop artist). The beginning of the video shows Drake when he was younger in his home town of Toronto trying to get into football, then later on in life working in a supermarket. Followed by various things he's been doing since he became famous for his music.
Costumes and props:
During the video Drake is wearing many outfits, however at the beginning of the video he is seen in an all white outfit. The colour white connotes new beginnings and the colour of perfection. Therefore, this could signify the meaning of the title of Drakes song 'started from the bottom' as he is starting a new life in New York City and gaining new exciting experiences. Throughout the majority of the music video Drake is seen wearing silver or gold chains and other jewellery which symbolises the status of the individual, the wealthiness and power of the artist. The usage of white clothing and jewellery (such as chains) are commonly used in Rnb/hiphop music videos.
Throughout the video there are mangy props used which signify various aspects. As mentioned above Drake is seen wearing and all white fit, however he has included a white Bentley vehicle within his video during this specific scene. This could signify him 'showing off' as he was once not as wealthy as he is now but proud of his achievement. It is stereotyped that upperclass status individuals smoke cigars and Drake is seen doing so within the video which once again states his power and status. The private jet used is yet another expensive prop used within the video, which again signifies Drake's wealthiness.
Camera language:
Various elements of camera language is used during the music video. For example when the artist is rapping next to his car low angle shots are used to connote the artists status, power and dominance which signifies that he is superior then everyone else. Close ups are also used to 'show off' the rappers expensive jewellery symbolising his wealthiness. The specific elements of camera language is expected be used as in the majority of other RnB music videos camera angles such as low angles and close up shots are frequently used.
Location:

For example the rappers hometown of Toronto, which is yet another convention of RnB music videos and is commonly used within this genre of music videos. Year 12 skills development
How creative were you last year?
During my AS level media studies during year 12, I was quite creative as I came up with many ideas for my groups production film 'The Abductor'. I came up with the majority of my film's story plot. My strongest ability was sharing many ideas and developing them further as a group.
What digital technology did you use last year?
During my first year of media studies, the technology I used was the Apple Mac computers in order to edit our film production and to do the majority of coursework on. Hand-held video cameras were also used during our filiming, in order to capture shots of our film production plot.
What research and planning did you do last year in order to be successful?
It was very crucial to ensure that reseacrh and planning was done before, after and whilst doing our coursework and exam practise, the majoirty of my research was spent on my coursework as I had to find out key elements of information to apply to my coursework; for example researching the code and conventions of thriller movies to ensure that my thriller clip had the conventions similar to other thriler movies. Planning that was importat within the first year of media studies was to plan the deadlines of when different peices of coursework would be completed by, to ensure that I was not behind and have enough time to revise for my exam aspect of my over AS level grade for media studies.
What post-production technology did you use last year?
Post-production technology used last year, were software such as 'Final-Cut Pro'. This was one of the most useful form of software to use as it allowed us to gain skills to edit our thriller clip.
What conventions did you apply to your coursework?
Conventions applied to my coursework was based upon the genre of thriller, as that was the key requirement from the exam board OCR. I also tried to follow the guidelines of what the examinar was looking for within the coursework inorder to get the highest mark possible.
